Chapter Thirteen

Having spent three hours empowering and talking to the giddiest red-eye he’d ever met, Daniel was full and well prepared for the meeting with the Grand Council.

Seldon and Leon hadn’t emerged from wherever until after Jason had been put to bed, and Hardy and Camille were thinking about turning in, too. It had apparently been a great introduction to Cubi feeding. Caledon had needed human hormones, too, so while he had rounded up Oliver and driven him crazy on the coffee table, Daniel had fed on the Guard Lady on his detail.

All ready for bed, the threesome had bundled up under the covers and chatted about the day. It all seemed to be calming down, yet Daniel knew not to think like that. The moment he thought that, a curveball would hit him out of the blue, and he hated that he already looked for it. That he already expected one.

Then again, maybe he’d be able to be prepared if he had any idea what to look for? Sitting in the Grand Hall, waiting for everybody to be present, it was the right place to think about it.

“What boggles a young King’s mind, if a friend may ask?”

Daniel smiled at hearing Randr’s voice. “I think I’m a pessimist.”

Randr snorted laughter. “I think that might be a Royal trait, then.”

Daniel chuckled. “Please, sit with me.”

Randr stepped out of camouflage and took the seat next to Daniel, who grabbed another cup and poured coffee for the friend who offered an ear.

“I was just thinking that these past weeks after the execution, things have settled down.”

“They have.”

“But when I usually think that, a curveball hits me, knocking my Kingdom for a loop.”

Randr nodded slowly, thinking, his strong and worn hands wrapped around the mug. “Ela sometimes asks us what we would foresee as the most pressing matters at the moment to potentially blow up in his face.”

Daniel recognized that thought pattern as his current one. “And if this was his Kingdom now and he asked you, what would you say?”

“Your Kingdom has yet to find a new structure, and the lack of structure is the weak point. The lack of hierarchy and chain of command is the most dangerous to a Cubi society. I would advise my King to establish that fast, and I would advise it done by his people seeing him in the flesh. But to do that, safety must be established when traveling these shared nations. One, two, three. Declare the new structure fast, establish common grounds as you’re planning to by meeting with the heads of your shared nations, then go to your people and share yourself with them to bind them to you the way those in this House are already.”

Daniel nodded, thinking that sounded like sound advice.

“I know that is what Ela focuses on whenever a major change has occurred. I see and hear his people praise him for covering that need.”

“Have you heard about the cities?”

Randr smiled. “Yes. I think they’re very interesting, but they won’t help the stranded Cubi.
